Oil fracking and earthquakes

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves thrusting chemicals and water against shale rock to break it up and release oil or gas. The process produces large amounts of waste fluid, or brine, that is either recycled or disposed of in injection wells . Despite the increasingly apparent threat posed by fracking-related earthquakes, many states are ignoring the issue: “Nine months after a National Academy of Sciences panel said oil and gas regulators should take steps to prevent man-made earthquakes , officials in key states are ignoring quake potential as they rewrite their drilling rules.” Fracking is responsible for the earthquakes in Oklahoma; they are triggered by the injection of wastewater deep into the ground. The volume and depth of injected wastewater deep into the ground by fracking methods may be the key drivers in the induced earthquakes in Oklahoma, according to a major study published in the journal Science.

The U.S. Geological Survey has maintained that fracking is not the cause of most induced earthquakes. However, earthquakes have occurred in Oklahoma and nearby states as a result of wastewater

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” (a drilling process that injects millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals under high pressure into a well, cracking the rock and to release natural gas and oil) has only been known to rarely cause earthquakes. But the disposal of drilling wastewater used in fracking has It is important to note that it is not the fracking process itself that usually causes these earthquakes; it is the rapid injection of fluid during wastewater disposal that sometimes pumps Earthquakes are more commonly caused not by fracking itself but by the disposal of dirty water that comes out of a well along with oil or gas. When this so-called O hio regulators did something last month that had never been done before: they drew a tentative link between shale gas fracking and an increase in local earthquakes.
